Last week the big kids learned about the Bluebonnet Award, and this week the littles got to learn about the Armadillo award! The Armadillo Readers’ Choice Award is a program for K-2 students in Round Rock ISD. Each year, ten outstanding picture books are nominated by librarians in the district, with special attention to diversity, variety of literature, appealing high-interest subject matter, and curricular areas in building the book list. Each Spring, K-2 students vote for their favorite Armadillo book. Votes are tallied across the district and the winning author is presented with the Armadillo Readers' Choice Award! Approximately 10,000 K-2 students participate in the Armadillo program each year.
We kicked off our 17-18 Armadillo List with the book Wanted! Ralphy Rabbit, Book Burglar by Emily MacKenzie. Ralphy loves books so much that he starts stealing them! A friend shows him a great place to borrow books...the library! In the story, Ralphy had a list of books that he wanted to read but hadn't yet. After finishing the story, students in K, 1, and 2 thought about books they'd put on a "to read" list. They then used PicCollage Kids to create a poster that displayed a book or two that they'd like to read some day. It was really fun!
